Looking through all these bar graphs I can see that the main response I received was positive. I can see from my audience feedback that people can tell my teaser, magazine and poster are from the same campaign which is a vital point. From audience feedback I can also see that people like the layout the of my magazine and poster and they have found it to be every eye catching and it has made them want to watch the film.

My Films Classification

When deciding what classification my film would be I first had to go on to the BBFC's guidelines so I could work out exactly which category my film would come under.

The BBFC's 15 classification guidelines:

’15′

Suitable only for 15 years and over

No one younger than 15 may see a ‘15’ film in a cinema. No one younger than 15 may rent or buy a ‘15’ rated video work.

Discrimination

The work as a whole must not endorse discriminatory language or behaviour.

Drugs

Drug taking may be shown but the film as a whole must not promote or encourage drug misuse. The misuse of easily accessible and highly dangerous substances (for example, aerosols or solvents) is unlikely to be acceptable.

Horror

Strong threat and menace are permitted unless sadistic or sexualised.

Imitable behaviour

Dangerous behaviour (for example, hanging, suicide and self-harming) should not dwell on detail which could be copied. Easily accessible weapons should not be glamorised.

Language

There may be frequent use of strong language (for example, ‘fuck’). The strongest  terms (for example, ‘cunt’) may be acceptable if justified by the context. Aggressive or repeated use of the strongest language is unlikely to be acceptable.

Nudity

Nudity may be allowed in a sexual context but without strong detail. There are no constraints on nudity in a non-sexual or educational context.

Sex

Sexual activity may be portrayed without strong detail. There may be strong verbal references to sexual behaviour, but the strongest references are unlikely to be acceptable unless justified by context. Works whose primary purpose is sexual arousal or stimulation are unlikely to be acceptable.

Theme

No theme is prohibited, provided the treatment is appropriate for 15 year olds.

Violence

Violence may be strong but should not dwell on the infliction of pain or injury. The strongest gory images are unlikely to be acceptable. Strong sadistic or sexualised violence is also unlikely to be acceptable. There may be detailed verbal references to sexual violence but any portrayal of sexual violence must be discreet and have a strong contextual justification.

The BBFC's 18 classification guidelines:

’18′

Suitable only for adults

No-one younger than 18 may see an ‘18’ film in a cinema.

No-one younger than 18 may rent or buy an ‘18’ rated video.

In line with the consistent findings of the BBFC’s public consultations and The Human Rights Act 1998, at ‘18’ the BBFC’s guideline concerns will not normally override the principle that adults should be free to choose their own entertainment. Exceptions are most likely in the following areas:

• where the material is in breach of the criminal law, or has been created through the commission of a criminal offence
• where material or treatment appears to the BBFC to risk harm to individuals or, through their behaviour, to society – for example, any detailed portrayal of violent or dangerous acts, or of illegal drug use, which may cause harm to public health or morals. This may include portrayals of sexual or sexualised violence which might, for example, eroticise or endorse sexual assault
• where there are more explicit images of sexual activity which cannot be justified by context. Such images may be appropriate in ‘R18’ works, and in ‘sex works’ (see below) would normally be confined to that category.

In the case of video works (including video games), which may be more accessible to younger viewers, intervention may be more frequent than for cinema films.

Sex education at ‘18’

Where sex material genuinely seeks to inform and educate in matters such as human sexuality, safer sex and health, explicit images of sexual activity may be permitted.

Sex works at ‘18’

Sex works are works whose primary purpose is sexual arousal or stimulation. Sex works containing only material which may be simulated are generally passed ‘18’. Sex works containing clear images of real sex, strong fetish material, sexually explicit animated images, or other very strong sexual images will be confined to the ‘R18’ category. Material which is unacceptable in a sex work at ‘R18’ is also unacceptable in a sex work at ‘18’. 

After looking through these guidelines I would say that my film would come under the 18 classification as my film portrays violent and dangerous acts which may cause harm to public health or morals.

Magazine Pictures

These are potential pictures for my magazine front cover

I think that this picture would be quite good for my front cover due to his physical behaviour.

I feel that these pictures would also be appropriate for my magazine front cover as it is of the main 'hero' and in some of the horror magazines that I have noticed don't have a monster on the front cover.

In this next post I am designing potential magazine front covers but it is only rough designs. I am doing this to get a feel for what type of layout I want to use. After I'll then move on to more developed layouts with actual text.

Magazine Fonts

In this post I am having a look at different magazine fonts that would look good for my magazine. After looking through many magazines I have come up with a few different styles that I think will work with my own magazine.

Potential Magazine Names

In this post I will choose at least 5 potential magazine names for my mainstream magazine and the reasons to why I think they are appropriate.

Horror Film Monthly - This magazine is appropriate for a mainstream audience, this is because of its very broad name and it will naturally include a wide range of horror information.

Slice & Dice - I think that this is a very catchy magazine title and is appropriate for a horror magazine due to its reference of slicing and dicing.


Monster Monthly - This title gives out a different vibe than my other choices and is more of a villain magazine but can still discuss new horror films of the month.


Horror Hound - Horror hound I feel is a catchy magazine title and by using the word hound it feels as if once you open it, there will be no way out.

Blood, Guts & Gore - This magazine title would be quite good as horror films are all about the blood and guts so audiences will instantly recognise it as a horror magazine.

After looking through these option I created a focus group and averaged the scores to see which one is most popular.

From these results I can see that Horror Film Monthly is the most popular and is the title that I will be using in my magazine.

I think the cover lines that I have chosen are very appropriate for my magazine as they are related to horror which is what my magazine is based about.

Specific Magazine Annotations

In the next few posts I am annotating specific magazine (horror) front covers that are related to my own genre that I have chosen.

After annotating this magazine front cover I can see certain things that I will most likely be using in my own magazine front cover such as the cover lines about up coming horror films, perhaps a special on a certain area of horror. After looking at a few more front covers I will have a much better idea of what to include in mine.

This magazine front cover seems to be different from the last as the central image seems to be a saviour instead of a monster which can be seen through her figure behaviour and the items that she is carrying. From this I can see that it doesn't always have to be the monster on the background. The font again is red to indicate danger which is something that I will take into consideration when I choose to make my own magazine front cover.

This magazine seems to have a monster on the front cover unlike the one before where there is a saviour. The masthead is a bold and bloody font to catch the audiences eye. This seems to be convention on most horror magazines.

This magazine front cover also seems to have red font which I have noticed on most horror magazines. Its cover lines are all about horror and upcoming films. When I come to creating my own horror magazine I will have a much better idea of what to include.

5 Different Publications

In this post I'm looking through different types of magazine publications to gain a broader understanding of the types of things that come up in certain magazines.


Sight & Sound

After looking through this magazine I can already see differences from the first mainstream magazine I looked at. In this magazine it seems although the title is in a bright colour it does not seem to be the dominant text on screen. The picture in the centre of the magazine is a director instead of a main A list actor, it is very normal for this to happen as this is an independent magazine and tailors towards a independent audience. The cover lines consist of independent film titles and certain well known directors. If I were to produce a independent film this would be the kind of magazine that it would be shown in.

Empire

After looking through this magazine I can see a massive difference between the Sight & Sound magazine and a mainstream magazine. The title of this magazine is the biggest font on the page and can be instantly recognised. 

American Cinematographer

This magazine is for the more serious film goers, people who are interested in what's behind the scenes. The front cover of other magazines I have looked at have been A'list actors or directors. This magazine seems to be more of an independent type magazine so when I come to making mine, depending on what time of magazine it is will depend of the features that I put into it.

Screen International

After annotating the front cover of this magazine I can see this magazine is aimed at a more niche market and much different than the big and bold mainstream magazines that are full of huge blockbusters. This magazine focuses more on the behind the scenes at the making of the film.

Movie Maker

This magazine also seems to tailor towards an independent audience but still has some mainstream features such as it has cover lines about mainstream movie's. The central image is an up coming actor in Hollywood who last played in quite a mainstream movie. When I decide what magazine mine will tailor to I will definitely have a much broader idea of the kind of things that magazines focus on.

In my next post I have chosen to annotate a magazine from cover to get a brief understanding of the kind of things that I will include in mine.

After looking through the layout of this of this magazine I can see certain things that come up on a magazine front cover which I have labelled above. 

New Poster

After receiving some audience feedback from my audience, I found that the picture I was using for my poster didn't reveal much about the genre and the way I presented my reviews was very engaging and also didn't help reveal anything about the genre of the poster.

After going back to my poster I changed the image and gave it some effects - Pen Sketch, and then lowering the brightness and changing the colour to black and white. After doing this, this is what I came out with:

I found that after making these changes the reaction I got from my poster was much more positive and that the picture showed a lot more about the genre including

Magazines

Even though a production/distribution company for a film will not be able to control exactly what appears on the front cover of a film magazine, film magazines still play an important part in a films marketing campaign. My first piece of research will be looking at different types of film magazines that exists so that I can decide what style of film publication would be most likely to feature my film on their cover. below is a list of film publications I have found with a short paragraph about what type of films they cover and who their audience is. I will be creating an imaginary magazine but it will be in the style of which ever magazine I decide is most appropriate for my film.

Total Film

Total Film is a British film magazine published 13 times a year (every four weeks) by future publishing. The magazine was launched in 19997 and offers film, DVD and Blue-Ray new, reviews and features. After taking a deeper look into this magazine publication through the on line website, audience that it is aiming towards seems to be 15-30s. This is due to the films advertised on the website which are mainly mainstream films such as: Spider-Man, Ghost Rider and The Muppet's.

Empire

Empire is a British film magazine published monthly (every four weeks). It reviews both mainstream films and also art house films. The audience that the magazine is aimed towards is also ages 15-30 who are the mainstream audience. They review films such as Men In Black III and Batman: The Dark Knight Rises.

Sight and Sound

Sight and Sound is a British monthly film magazine, published by the British Film Institute. The content of this magazine is mostly British or independent world cinema films. The age range is most likely much older than the more typical mainstream audience of 15-30, it is most likely from 25 and on.

Premiere

Premiere was an American and New York based film magazine published between the years of 1987 and 2007. The original version of the magazine was started in France in 1976 and is still being published there. The audience for this magazine seems to be aimed towards some mainstream films but still looking at the world cinema and independent films.

Screen International

Screen International is a multimedia film magazine covering the international film business. The magazine is aimed at at those involved in the global movie business. The content of this magazine seems to be mostly aimed at an older audience, older than the usual mainstream audience and they look at more independent worldwide films.

Box Office

Box Office is a film industry magazine dedicated to the movie theatre business published by Box Office Media LP. This film publication mainly looks at mainstream films but also looks at some art house theatre films. 

Bright Lights Film Journal

Bright Lights Film Journal is an online popular-academic film magazine. This magazine seems to be aimed at mostly art house cinema films and looked at by a much older audience than the typical mainstream audience of 15-24.

The Hollywood Reporter

The Hollywood Reporter is a unique hybrid magazine serving the entertainment industry and a consumer audience. This multi platform brand consists of an over sized weekly magazine, seasonal special reports, glossies, a high-traffic website, a mobile optimized site, a digital daily, iPad app and events. This magazine seems to target the mainstream audience but at an older range looking at the 18-35 age.

Movie Maker

Movie Maker is an American magazine focused on the art and business of making movie's with special emphasise on independent film. The target audience for this type of publication is older than the typical mainstream audience.

Hot Dog

This magazine, when it was still publishing used to consists of mainly independent films or much older films that would usually only been shown at the BFI and/or art house cinemas. The target audience for this is a much older audience than the mainstream 15-24 ages.

American Cinematographer

American Cinematographer is a monthly magazine published by the American Society of Cinematographers. This magazine mainly focuses on the art of cinematography, going behind the scenes on domestic and international productions. The magazine also features in-depth interviews with cinematographers, directors and some of their key collaborators at every stage of production. The target audience of this magazine is going to be considerably older than the more typical mainstream audience.

Neon

Neon was a British film magazine which dealt with more cult and classic films and included the latest film news, previews, actors profiles and interviews. The audience for this magazine is likely to be for a much older and more serious film going audience.

Cine Action

Cine Action which is a Canada based film magazine published three times a year. This magazine mainly focuses on international cinema and the independent cinema. The audience for this magazine is more likely to be of an older audience and more serious film goers.

Close Up

This film publication mainly focuses on worldwide cinema and independent movie's with a much older target audience, more than the typical mainstream audience.

Film Comment

Film Comment is an arts and culture magazine published by the Film Society of Lincoln Centre. The magazine features in-depth analysis of mainstream, art-house, and film making around the world. The audience for this magazine is most likely to be a small portion of mainstream audience but most likely to be aimed at a much older and more serous film going audience interested in the in-depth analysis of a film.

Entertain Magazine

Entertain Magazine was a British news stand magazine focusing on film, DVD, video games and themed entertainment. This magazine seems to focus on both mainstream and independent films so the audience for this magazine ranges from the mainstream audience to a older more mature film watching audience.

Monthly Film Bulletin

Monthly Film Bulletin was a periodical of the British Film Institute published monthly. In mainly reviewed all films on release in the United Kingdom, including those with a narrow art house release. This magazine is similar to Sight & Sound with a older mature audience who are most likely more serious film goers.

Little White Lies

Little White Lies is a bi-monthly, British independent movie magazine that feature writing, illustration and photography related to cinema. The audience for this magazine are most likely to be an older audience than the more typical mainstream audience.

DVD Monthly

DVD monthly is a UK based national based magazine focusing on DVD and home entertainment news and reviews. The audience for this magazine would be for more serious film goers but might not be regular cinema goers.

Star Burst

Star Burst is a British Science fiction magazine. The target audience this magazine are mostly likely to be aimed at anyone interested in the science fiction magazine.

After this exercise I have a better understanding of magazine form and the type of audience that will read a certain magazine.
